Session Description: Whether it’s getting kids to brush their teeth or persuading the public to drink fluoridated tap water, social marketing is an effective way to reach your audience and create healthy behaviors. Social marketing is the use of commercial marketing principles to influence human behavior for the greater social good. This presentation will examine the use of social marketing in dental public health. It will tell the story of how the Maryland Office of Oral Health created a robust social marketing model, now in its ninth year. It will look at how the program began, developed and grew into an essential component of the office. The presentation will examine specific social marketing campaigns pointing out how marketing principals and techniques were used to achieve measurable changes in behavior. The session will conclude with lessons learned and tips for building a social marketing program within your own state.
Understand the value of a social marketing and be able to identify three (3) ways that social marketing can benefit their state oral health program.
Understand how to use the Maryland Social Marketing Model to create a social marketing program within their own state.
How to conduct a targeted social marketing campaign by being able to list the steps necessary to do so.
Measure the impact of a social marketing campaign by understanding the steps necessary to conduct a pre-post campaign survey.
Understand the importance of sustaining social marketing efforts and identify at least two (2) ways to potentially do so.
