Mega Simulation: Student transformation to competent nurse
Mega simulation: Student transformation to competent nurse
Collaboration with clinical partners resulted in a recognition of a lack of students’ ability to care for multiple patients in their initial RN role post-graduation. This served as the impetus for the creation of mega simulation at a private Midwestern University. Mega simulation refers to the utilization of multiple patient scenarios in a single simulation environment. This technique is used to enhance the transition of undergraduate student nurses into nursing practice. The presentation will address how to develop and implement mega simulation into the nursing curriculum using standards of best practice. This is achieved by assigning one student nurse four simulated patients simultaneously as they would in the clinical setting. The development of mega simulation promotes critical thinking, clinical reasoning skills, delegation, and prioritization to positively impact the student nurse learning experience. The scenarios include concepts of pediatric oxygenation, adult perfusion, adult stress and coping, and adult tissue integrity. After mega simulation implementation, student outcomes resulted in increased student confidence in caring for multiple clients, increased critical thinking skills, and improved delegation and prioritization skills. Student learning in simulation is measured utilizing the INASCL debriefing assessment for simulation in healthcare (DASH) tool. Mega simulation incorporates innovative teaching methods by widening the knowledge of students and preparing them for overall practice. The goal of this presentation is to describe the development and integration of mega simulation into undergraduate nursing curriculum in order to allow fellow educators the opportunity for implementation.
