Aquasorb - Improving Moisture and Nutrient Retention into the Soil Profile for New Construction and Sod Installation Projects
With an unprecedented increasing world population and declining food productivity, due to various abiotic stresses like water, it has become imperative to search for avenues of sustaining productivity while minimizing losses of natural resources in our planet.
SNF currently supplies Aquasorb™ superabsorbent polymers. Aquasorb™ is a water retaining, cross-linked hydrophilic, biodegradable amorphous polymer which can absorb and retain water at least 400 times its original weight and make at least 95 per cent its stored water available for plant absorption. When polymer is mixed with the soil, it forms an amorphous gelatinous mass on hydration and is capable of absorption and desorption over long period of time, hence acting as a slow-release source of water in the soil. The SAP particles may be taken as “miniature water reservoirs” in the soil and water will be removed from these reservoirs upon the root demand through osmotic pressure difference.
The large quantities of water retained by the polymer provide extra available water to plants which facilitates better plant growth. More available water in the soil also means less frequent watering or irrigation. Aquasorb™, reduces watering frequency, It also reduces irrigation amount from 100 down to 80-85% of the water requirements. Those benefits are especially important on Newly vegetation establishment (Hydroseeding) or landscape projects, ( Sod) where extra irrigation or maintenance is costly and increasing foot print.
The Aquasorb line consists of Polyacrylamide- based, cross-linked polymers available in various particle sizes ranging from 0.3 to 4.0 millimeters ( 300-4,000 microns) depending on the application type:

It is important to improve the water use efficiency of plants. With an improved water use efficiency (WUE), limited amount of available
water can be used effectively. The results of such studies have demonstrated, install projects could be benefited by adding polymer into the soil. The presence of water in soil is essential for vegetation which ensures the feeding of plants with nutritive elements, and makes it possible for the plants to obtain a better growth rate.
