The Way To Keep Your Post-Construction BMPs Compliant Is To Stop Doing Things That Don't Work
For nearly two decades, stormwater agencies all across the U.S. have worked tirelessly to integrate NPDES stormwater regulations into their land development codes. In the implementation process, not only has stormwater design and construction become more expensive – but, for the first time, land development professionals and their agents have been forced to accept that ongoing operating costs for inspections and maintenance of these stormwater treatment systems is here to stay.
Many of us in engineering and construction businesses have been designing and building stormwater BMPs for years – if not decades. After observing many noteworthy successes and studying some unfortunate failures, Stormwater STL LLC has first-hand knowledge and experience with how these systems function. At the same time, we recognize that our industry continues to evolve and that much learning is yet to be done - if we want to give our customers the most cost-effective treatment systems possible.
Unfortunately, design and construction teams seldom have the opportunity to monitor the as-built functionality of their systems. Without benefit of this feedback mechanism, they are neither exploiting their successes nor correcting their failures. Smart owners however, are turning their attention to the goal of getting the best performance from these systems at the least annual operating and maintenance cost.
This program highlights how design and construction decisions impact the functionality and the life-cycle cost of your stormwater BMPs. The foundation of this program is built around the things Stormwater STL has learned during more than 2000 stormwater quality system inspections and features real life examples – complete with photos – of both good and less than good design and construction practices. We will pinpoint some of the details that have system owners frustrated with their designer and/or contractor every time it rains. Recommendations will also be offered for changes that will reduce operating and maintenance costs, improve customer relationships and strengthen your firm’s brand in today’s competitive marketplace.
Since founding Stormwater STL in 2008, Steve Polk has immersed himself in the design, construction, inspection and maintenance of Post-Construction stormwater quality facilities throughout the St. Louis metropolitan area. From a single inspection in 2008, Stormwater STL now routinely inspects more than 175 projects with more than 500 BMPs annually – all within the jurisdiction of Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District. Throughout this period of tremendous growth and change, Steve has steadfastly focused on his stated mission of “protecting our customers and preserving our environment.”
