Portions of Caswell Beach Road become impassible to passenger vehicles from moderate rainfall events and remain impassable for more then eight hours. The road is the only ingress/egress for approximately 240 residents, the Duke Energy Progress Nuclear Pumping Station, the United States Coast Guard Station Oak Island, and the North Carolina Baptist Assembly grounds at Fort Caswell. WK Dickson is assisting the Town with planning, designing and constructing an innovative Dune Infiltration System (DIS) that will accept and infiltrate this stormwater. This new system will allow the Town to pump out the low points along their primary road, increasing the ability for the Town to respond to emergencies during and immediately after storm events and provides an opportunity to safely infiltrate stormwater runoff. Participants will review the main design considerations and site constraints that a community should consider when determining the installation feasibility of these systems.
