Michael V. Pantalon, PhD is a clinical psychologist and Senior Research Scientist in the Department of Emergency Medicine who has been an addiction researcher at Yale School of Medicine for the past 23 years. His early work involved ground-breaking research in the area of brief motivational interviewing (MI) for inpatient individuals with co-occurring psychiatric and substance use disorders. Dr. Pantalon and his colleagues have developed and tested the Brief Negotiation Interview (BNI), an ultra-brief adaptation of MI, which has been the focus on several large-scale federally-funded randomized controlled trials. Dr. Pantalon has conducted BNI trainings for hundreds of faculty and residents in various Yale School of Medicine departments and beyond, and has trained thousands of professionals in brief MI. Most recently, he and his colleagues have developed a web-based, “virtual coach” to train residents to perform the BNI for patients with high-risk alcohol use in medical settings. In addition to publishing scores of scientific articles on this research, Dr. Pantalon has written a best-selling self-help book on an ultra-brief adaptation of MI called "Instant Influence" (Little, Brown & Co., 2011). Finally, he has an addiction psychotherapy practice in New Haven, CT and a behavioral health tech start-up focused on delivering evidence- and text-based addiction coaching (www.recoverypad.com).
