Associate Professor, Endocrinology
Dr. Dean attended The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee where she graduated cum laude with BA degree in Biology. She received her MD degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham, Alabama. Her initial plan was to pursue a career in radiology. She matched into radiology residency at the Medical University of South Carolina where she completed one year of training. This year provided a solid foundation for the interpretation of imaging studies as well as with the diagnostic use of ultrasound. Longing for more patient contact and interaction, she decided to pursue training in internal medicine at Mayo Clinic. This residency was followed by a fellowship in Endocrinology at Mayo. Following graduation, she became a member of the faculty in 2002.
She is currently a Consultant and Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at Mayo Clinic Rochester. Her main clinical interests include benign and malignant disorders of the thyroid gland and ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration of thyroid nodules.
Dr. Dean combines her clinical interests with a strong passion for education and speaking. She has won numerous awards for clinical education. Her lectures to the medical students, residents and fellows rank consistently as favorites. She has received several teaching awards from the Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education and the Mayo School of Continuous Professional Development. She has taught ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration at Endocrine University for the last 20 years and at numerous AACE, Endocrine Society, and ATA courses.
