State of the Art Screenings Facility for San Mateo’s WWTP

The City of San Mateo (City) collects, conveys, and treats wastewater for the citizens of San
Mateo and other nearby communities. In 2014 The City established the Clean Water Program (CWP) to respond to regulatory issues and aging infrastructure and is replacing the existing liquid treatment stream with new state-of-the-art headworks, primary clarifiers, Bioactiflo®, biological nutrient removal, and membrane bioreactor (MBR) treatment technology.
The headworks screening portion of the project includes preliminary screens to remove large debris where four 6-millimeter (mm) perforated plate screens will be installed. Fine screens are required to protect the MBR membranes from fouling, damage, and debris. One hundred percent of all flows conveyed to the MBR process must pass through fine screening. Four 2-mm inclined drum screens with an integral washer and compactor will be installed. Screenings are conveyed by shaftless screw conveyor and sluice, are washed, compacted, and are directed to an articulating dumpster for hauling off site.
Speakers will include Azalea Mitch, Deputy Public Works Director for the City of San Mateo, and Jenny Skrel, Lead Design Manager for HDR on the San Mateo WWTP Project. Ms. Mitch will provide a brief overview of the City’s Clean Water Program and WWTP Upgrade Project and Ms. Skrel will provide a detailed approach to HDR’s design of the screenings facility which was completed in collaboration with the City WWTP staff and Sundt, the City’s Construction Management at Risk (CMAR) contractor.
