Dr. Shammas is a coronary and peripheral vascular interventionalist and the president and research director of the Midwest Cardiovascular Research Foundation. He is also adjunct Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at Univ of Iowa. He has published over 400 manuscripts, abstracts, book chapters, and books, and has been the principal investigator on over 200 national clinical trials. His main research interests are development of techniques for optimal endovascular interventions, with a focus on the triad of vessel prepping, distal embolic protection and anti-restenotic therapies, and in management of arterial and venous thrombotic occlusions and deep venous interventions.
Dr. Shammas has been an editorial board member and a reviewer for numerous journals. He is the Section Editor on Advances in Venous Disease for the
Journal of Invasive Cardiology. He currently serves as the Governor for the Iowa Chapter of the American College of Cardiology.
Dr. Shammas has lectured nationally and internationally on atherectomy, venous disease, critical limb ischemia, management of acute and subacute thrombotic disease, and on distal embolization in peripheral vascular disease.
