Dr. Asztalos graduated from the University of Toronto in 1984 and completed her neonatal training in 1989. She joined the Neonatal program at Women’s College Hospital in 1989 where she assumed the role of Director of the Neonatal Follow-up Clinic for the next 25 years. In 2007, she became the Director for the perinatal clinical trials unit at Women’s College Hospital/Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre until 2015.
She is a Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto in the Departments of Paediatrics and Obstetrics and Gynecology and also holds a position at the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation.
Her research endeavours over the past years have been on studying interventions in the maternal-fetal medicine and neonatal field and their impact on the outcomes of the high-risk neonate and in particular, the very preterm neonate. She has been involved in a number of clinical trials in both neonatal medicine which include the TIPP trial, the CAP series of trials, PINT and PINTOS, and COT, as well as in maternal fetal medicine including MACS, MACS-5, TBS, MiTy, and CHIPS.
She has been the lead investigator for several CIHR funded projects which have included MACS-5, EMPOWER, and now currently, LIFT_Canada.
