Dr. Pascal Lavoie is a staff Neonatologist, Research Director for the Neonatal Program at BC Women’s Hospital and Associate Professor at UBC. He completed medical school and a PhD in Experimental Medicine at McGill University, a pediatric residency at the University of Montreal, and a fellowship in Neonatal/Perinatal Medicine at UBC, where he joined as full-time Faculty in 2008. His wet-lab research lab at BC Children's Hospital constitutes his core research program where his team works to understand why newborns are vulnerable to infections, and integrating "-omics” research methods to study the development of the human immune system. Relevant to his presentation is also work his team conducts in Malawi to build diagnostic technologies to help diagnose and triage neonatal acute care for newborns with suspected sepsis.
