Dr. Ambalavanan is a tenured Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. After completion of medical school and pediatric residency in India, he arrived at the University of Alabama at Birmingham for his pediatric residency and neonatology fellowship. He has been on faculty at UAB since 2000, and now holds the Virginia Walker Jones Chair in Neonatology. He is the Director of the Division of Neonatal Research and the Translational Research in Normal and Disordered Development (TReNDD) Program, and Co-Director of the Division of Neonatology. The Division currently provides neonatal services at the 120-bed University of Alabama at Birmingham Regional NICU (level IV), the 48-bed Children’s of Alabama NICU (level IV), and multiple level III community NICUs. Dr. Ambalavanan is also the Fellowship Training Program Director for Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine. He leads a basic science laboratory focused on lung development and BPD, and also manages single center and multicenter observational and interventional clinical studies in critically ill infants. He has more than 280 publications, and is an investigator on many NIH grants.
