Presentation Description: This presentation will provide an overview and real-world examples of how IoT and big data analytics are being used in the wind industry to improve safety and operational performance. Continuous, real-time monitoring and trending of the health of critical drivetrain components is key to situational awareness and proactively managing wind farm assets. New technologies are now available which provide much clearer understanding of drivetrain component performance and can be used to identify early signs of failure so that action can be taken safely and timely; improving availability and extending the life of wind assets. Using IoT techniques to stream component performance data into a central repository, enables the performance of each critical drivetrain element (within each wind turbine) to be automatically and continually assessed versus its historical performance and as compared to similar components in sister wind turbines. Performance anomalies are identified early and used as actionable intelligence to keep drivetrains running smoothly; avoiding unplanned shutdowns and extending the life of the wind assets. Case studies will be presented showing how these new performance monitoring technologies are leveraging IoT and big data analytics to provide step-change improvements in operational performance.
Methodology: Wind turbine drivetrain elements have unique signatures which can be observed in the output signal of the generator.
1. Upon completion, participant will learn how new monitoring technologies are being used by the wind industry to drive overall improvement in operational performance.
2. Upon completion, participant will learn how advanced sensors can now detect subtle electrical signatures (unique to each drivetrain component) within the overall generator output signal; and how these unique signatures can be individually monitored and tracked to provide new insight into the health of critical drivetrain components.
3. Upon completion, participant will gain an understanding of how IoT and big data analytics are enabling continuous real-time tracking of the health of critical drivetrain components, providing improved situational awareness at both the wind farm and enterprise levels.
