This workshop introduces an often-unrecognized form of child abuse called Co-Occurring Criminal Asphyxiation (COCA), defined as criminal assault or homicide involving more than one type of asphyxiation, including strangulation, suffocation and aquatic abuse. Case histories will be presented of children who have experienced COCA during both sexual and non-sexual crimes with fatal and non-fatal outcomes. Attendees will learn how easily these cases are staged or misdiagnosed as accidents, natural disease processes or suicides. The lessons learned will change the way law enforcement, advocates, medical community and prosecutors handle these complicated yet dangerous cases. The psychological and medical trauma that can result from this type of escalated violence can result in misdiagnosed behavior issues, respiratory illnesses and other red flags that are typically not recognized as being associated with criminal asphyxia.
