The goal of this 2-day course is to provide the general practitioner with the knowledge and skills needed to diagnose and stage many common types of cancer, and based on those findings, determine the most appropriate surgical intervention indicated. This course will be team-taught by a board-certified surgeon with extensive experience in surgical oncology and a board-certified medical oncologist. The course faculty will present principles of surgical oncology including recommended techniques for sampling lymph nodes as well as bone, bladder, and skin masses. Appropriate disease staging, biologic behavior, and surgical excision of mast cell tumors, mesenchymal tumors, cutaneous melanoma, digital tumors, anal sac tumors, feline mammary cancer, and perianal tumors. Surgical treatment of masses located in high-tension and high-motion areas will be discussed. Participants will practice basic tension relieving techniques, appropriate wound closure, and techniques for specific clinical problems. Mastectomy, limb, and digital amputation techniques and indications will be discussed and practiced in the laboratory. Adjuvant therapies like chemotherapy, radiation, and melanoma vaccine will also be presented as indicated.
