Dr. Smeak currently serves as professor and chief of surgery, dental and oral surgery, at Colorado State University. He received his DVM degree from the Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1979. After completing an internship at Colorado State University, he finished a Small Animal Surgery residency at The Ohio State University. Dr. Smeak became certified by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1986 and served as a faculty member at The Ohio State University from 1984-2007. Dr. Smeak has earned numerous teaching awards, including the Norden Distinguished Teacher award, the Referral Clinician of the Year for three years, and the Clinical and Dean’s teaching awards. He has been invited as a keynote surgery speaker at meetings in Europe, North and South America, Africa, Korea, and Japan. Dr. Smeak has authored more than 100 journal articles and 30 textbook chapters, and has edited four textbooks. He is recognized for his practical and engaging teaching style, which emphasizes attainment of surgery skills that can be used immediately in practice and improve surgical outcomes.
