Welcome to the AWRA Geospatial Water Technology Conference: Complex Systems!
In the past, this conference took us all over the country. This year it is taking place where we never thought it would – in the cyberspace. We will all remember this conference as the one in the year of COVID-19.
Coincidentally, the theme of this year’s conference is Complex Systems. As we all are trying to make sense and adapt to the new reality of living during a pandemic, the complexity and connectivity of our world is becoming apparent, as if viewed under a magnifying glass. Water is a major connector of this world, and centuries of experience in water resources management have taught us that water itself is a complex system that involves flows in the natural environment and built infrastructure. This complexity manifests itself on multiple temporal, spatial and contextual scales, and is reflected across many conference sessions.
As we move towards deeper understanding of complexity, and in recognition of new, exciting technologies in geospatial analysis of water systems, our biennial conference has changed its name. The AWRA Geospatial Water Technology Conference starts its second decade of existence by continuing to embrace, but also moving beyond GIS in Water Resources. This is truly an exciting time for our community.
We have a great technical program ranging from traditional water resources topics to state-of-the-art technological advances in the field of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The conference is spread out over two weeks for you to attend most if not all the sessions. We have three fantastic plenary speakers: Heather Golden from USEPA, and Harry Evans and Christine Thies from University of Texas at Austin. Students and early career professionals will have several special events organized just for them. Don’t forget to attend the workshops, and visit our sponsors.
Thank you for attending the conference, and for sharing your thoughts and experience. We are looking forward to seeing you in the cyberspace, and hope you will enjoy the event!
