Assistant Professor
Macalester College
Mary Heskel (she/her) is an Assistant Professor of Ecology at Macalester College in St. Paul, MN, where she teaches courses on ecology, plant physiology, data analysis and arctic ecosystems. Her research focuses on plant physiological responses to climate change in forests and tundra. Prior to graduate school in ecology, Mary taught ninth grade biology in an under-resourced urban public school, and her college-level teaching is informed by that experience - especially an understanding that students' sense of belonging in the classroom can promote their success. To achieve this, Mary attempts individual and small-group interventions that personalize the classroom experience, as well as an emphasis on environmental justice and content relevance when covering ecology and climate change.
