Public policies can have far-reaching impacts on scientific research. In addition, science-based information is essential for effective policy. Two-way communication between scientists and policymakers is essential, but effective communication about public policy is a unique challenge. Our workshop will focus on two strategies for scientists to impact public policies related to their field. First, we will discuss how to communicate science to lawmakers and how to make oneself available as an expert who can be consulted on policy-related matters. Second, we will discuss how to provide public comments to policymakers in a manner that can have an impact on plant biology and related issues. Participants will have opportunities to develop their own strategies in small groups, and can participate in an optional extended Q&A after the session.
