Communicating for Impact: Conversing with Congress
Friday, July 31, 2020
3:00 PM – 4:00 PM EDT
Conveying the promise of plant science is the foundation on which to build public demand and funding for plant science research from governments and philanthropies. This workshop, led by Chris Barbey, a postdoc at the University of Florida, will feature a moderated Q&A discussion with Congressional staffers working for the co-leaders of the Congressional Agriculture Research Caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives. The conversation will provide a broad perspective on what motivates Capitol Hill, and participants will leave with a better understanding of how they can more meaningfully engage with their elected officials.
Congressional staffers Janie Costa and Riya Mehta will be participating in this workshop. Janie Costa is a legislative assistant for Congressman Rodney Davis (R-IL-13). She handles a portfolio that includes Agriculture Committee, trade, energy, environment and natural resources. Janie previously worked for Rep. Jeff Denham of California and handled the Agriculture Committee portfolio during the 2018 Farm Bill. She is from the Central Valley of California.
Riya Mehta is a legislative assistant for Congressman Jimmy Panetta (D-CA-20), leading a portfolio that includes agriculture, environment, energy, and infrastructure. Before joining Congressman Panetta’s office, she was a legislative fellow with the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry, under Ranking Member Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), where she helped negotiate the 2018 Farm Bill. Riya is originally from Overland Park, Kansas and has spent time living in Northern California.
