The National Science Foundation, an independent federal agency created by Congress in 1950, supports non-medical basic research in all science and engineering fields with an annual budget of about $8.3 billion. NSF funds approximately 20% of all federally supported basic research conducted by U.S. colleges and universities. The BIO Directorate supports biological research across scales in diverse plants, animals, and microbes.
