This talk will focus on the behavioral addictions. While only one is officially recognized by DSM-5 (can you guess which one?), a second is now a "Condition for Further Study" and many more are likely to follow in subsequent editions of DSM-5. We know these behaviors cause a disproportionate amount of distress among those who are afflicted, and it appears that behavioral addictions share the same neurobiology as substance use disorders. Some early promising results for pharmacotherapies will be explored. Above all, studying the behavioral addictions allows us to dive deeper into the issue of impulsivity vs. compulsivity, which is a helpful theoretical framework and applicable to all patients with any addictive disorder.
