This session provides an understanding of the principles of pharmacology and toxicology, which allows insight into how and why substance affect the human body. Pharmacokinetics describes the movement of chemicals throughout the body and pharmacodynamics describes the effects of drugs on physiological processes. Toxicology describes the adverse effects of substances, which may be dose-dependent and predictable or may be unexpected based on the pharmacologic effects. Understanding the pharmacology and toxicology of both drugs and medications allows addiction medicine specialists to optimize care for their patients.
