This lecture will cover three important topics in addiction medicine. It will start by presenting a brief history of the history of addiction treatment, focusing on the lessons we have learned about the illness and its treatment. The second portion will review the recently revised definition of addiction and its importance in focusing our policy and treatment efforts today. The third section will cover the ASAM Criteria, a critical tool for standardizing evidence-based care. All participants should be familiar with and use these criteria in addiction care and its research.
