For these special populations, we will review epidemiology, screening, complications of use and unique treatment issues. Adolescents tend to lack insight into the social, school and legal problems that result from substance use, while the elderly are often isolated and are most susceptible to the health consequences of substance use. For the elderly, health consequences may occur with low level substance use.
