This session will review the evolution of the prescription opioid epidemic, which lead to the heroin and fentanyl epidemics. The data regarding the effectiveness of chronic opioid therapy for chronic non-cancer pain will be shown. The CDC guidelines will be examined and the misconceptions which have arisen will be explained. The new HHS guideline on tapering of chronic opioids will be described. The role of buprenorphine to simultaneously treat opioid use disorder and chronic pain will be defined
