Addiction is a complex illness. Its treatment should be comprised of multiple approaches that are varied with each patient, codified into an organized treatment plan and modified frequently as the patient's needs change. Stabilizing the illness often, but not always, comes first. A skilled Addiction Medicine provider will identify needed motivational enhancement, support systems, psychotherapy needs, attention to other psychiatric illnesses, medical issues that need attention, family services, housing and relapse prevention training. This lecture is but a brief introduction to the complex topic of managing the whole patient.
