Track 2: Materials Conservation for the Future: Tradition, Sustainability and Innovation

This session will delve into a variety of materials-focused topics. Two presentations focused on wood roofing will provide insight on a) necessary considerations for preservation professionals with regard to conserving wooden roofs while meeting modern fire codes and b) test results concerning which wood coatings most successfully extend the service life of wooden roofs over time. The focus on natural materials will continue with a presentation on the development and preservation challenges of shell-based construction in St. Augustine, Florida, in the face of climate change. Finally, the session will delve into the development, advantages, and disadvantages of “Bricklath,” a little-known composite metal lath system touted as fire and rust-proof in the early 20th century.
