Dr. Hughes is a geologist and researcher in the property-performance relationships of historic construction materials, especially masonry mortars and stone. His work analyzes these materials for their mineralogy, geochemistry and microstructures, mainly through the application of optical and electron microscopy. Dr. Hughes’ research examines the effects of consolidants and surface treatments on historic materials, climate change impacts on cultural heritage, and the relationship of scientific
research to meaning and value in cultural heritage conservation. He has organized several conferences and workshops about cultural heritage construction materials.
