Description: A Union Between Pathology and SurgeryAbstract:Description of team: A team composed of 3 perioperative nurses saw an opportunity to enhance the process of specimen management within their facility.Preparation and planning: Upon research and several incident reports, the specimen process between surgery and pathology was found to be broken. An interprofessional team was created in hopes to better this process.
Assessment: Two major areas were identified: mislabeling and the use/misuse of formalin.Implementation: A meeting was scheduled with the interprofessional team to discuss areas of opportunities, other options, and lack of knowledge. Outcome: Education was created with great involvement from pathology team members, in which included hands on training, in-servicing, and accountability. Return demonstration was used as a validation method. The interprofessional team also evaluated a new product and other options to decrease the use of formalin by the nursing staff in the pathology lab. Implications for perioperative nursing: Collaboration and communication with other departments can be a challenging endeavor, however, working together a solution was found.
