289 - Visions of Success: Transforming Team Culture from 0 to 100
Description: The expansion of the Inova Fairfax Medical Campus included a new outpatient surgery center. One of the priorities was to promote a culture of excellence among the current staff. Leadership defined a culture of excellence as an engaged staff with optimal clinical outcomes. To achieve this goal, AORN best practice guidelines were used to determine an appropriate layout of the operating room, staff productivity, and standard workflow including technology for communication. Staff was empowered to take ownership and build a team atmosphere during their orientation process. A multidisciplinary approach utilizing project managers, educators, and leadership were able to strategically create a timeline and skills fair providing service line specific education and orientation to the unit. These actions resulted in a culture of excellence where employee engagement scores increased from 13% to 100% in less than a year of opening. Leadership standardized workflow, communication, education, and staff accountability. The standardized workflow utilizes AORN best practices and includes all perioperative units on one floor. Daily huddles and visual management boards are used to inform and make decisions with the team. Leadership remains visible and is located in a centralized location, empowering staff to approach management to create solutions to daily challenges. Technology is also used to create standardized communication throughout the entire perioperative unit. Educators and Leadership work together collaboratively to provide the necessary tools and environment for professional development. Prior to opening, there was individualized mentality creating a gap in staff engagement. During the initial development stages gap areas were identified including a lack of process standardization, staff accountability, communication, and education. In order to achieve a culture of excellence and increase employment engagement and satisfaction, a multidisciplinary team created cohesive work streams, ultimately aligning with Inova’s Mission to provide world-class healthcare – every time, every touch – to each person in every community we have the privilege to serve.
