Description: Increasing Resources: Increasing Certification Description of team- The management team at a community hospital in conjunction with perioperative education team, recognized the value in assisting eligible nurses through the certification process. Preparation and planning- Meetings were set to discuss strategies to increase CNOR certification within the operating room at a community hospital. It was discovered that the hospital enterprise offered a voucher program for the certification. The monetary cost was considered a barrier for nurses not receiving their certification. During these meetings the management team also decided to increase department resources and purchase CNOR study material for the department. Furthermore the perioperative education team agreed to offer multiple CNOR review courses at various locations. Assessment- Prior to this planning process very little information and resources were available for nurses at the community hospital location wishing to become certified. Implementation- The implementation of this plan began two years ago. The operating room educator held an informational session for CNOR eligible nurses. This session provided information about the voucher program, the education resources that were purchased by the department, and the CNOR review courses that were offered by the perioperative education team. Certification was strongly encouraged and a goal was set to increase department certification to fifty percent or greater. Outcome- After education of the staff, ten nurses signed up for the voucher program and went on to become certified within the first year of the plan implementation. This brought our certification rate over the fifty percent mark and the department achieved a CNOR strong designation. The department is within the second year of implementation at the community hospital location, five more nurses have become certified with multiple others in the process. The department received CNOR strong designation for the second year in a row. Implications for perioperative nursing- Through education and support of both the management and education teams, the operating room at a community hospital was able to greatly increase certification rates. Other units have since followed suit and purchased study materials, educated the staff on resources, and supported the process.
