326 - Improving Efficiencies in the OR: Leap into the Future
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a report card on operating room nurse circulators performance on decreasing turnover times and increasing first case on time starts (FCOTS). First case on time starts and decreased room turnover times have long been linked to increased operating room efficiency. Circulating nurses have always been given the control of their operating suite and can have an effect on the efficiency of an operating room. The performance of a nurse circulator can increase first case on time starts and decrease room turnover times thus increasing overall operating room efficiency. However, often times, a circulating nurse is unaware of their performance and is not given the necessary feedback to improve their performance. We utilized our real-time tracking system to generate a nurse’s report card. By utilizing our tracking system, a performance report card was generated and given to nursing staff monthly for three months in an effort to increase their awareness of their own performance and help to reduce their turnover time and increase their first case on time starts. Performance report cards consisted of the average turnover time and first case on time start percentage for each nurse. The report card allowed our nurses to be informed and aware of their own progress and departmental progress and improvements. After receiving monthly report cards, we noticed an increase in FCOTS procedures and a decrease in room turnover times.
