232 - Operating Room Traffic Control Cardiovascular Audit
Description: Clinicians and staff moving in and out of the Operating Room (OR) is known as OR Traffic. OR Traffic can contribute to Surgical Site Infections (SSIs). The Cardiovascular (CV) service noted an increase in the rate of SSIs. A pilot conducted in 2018 tracked OR traffic in the University Hospital (UH) Neurosurgery ORs and provided a structure to guide this project to explore non-sterile Registered Nurse (RN) OR traffic in CV surgical cases. The audit showed the main reasons why non-sterile CV OR RN staff enter and leave the OR suite. In order to reduce OR suite door opening, the CV team is actively brainstorming change ideas. The audit created an awareness and identified opportunities for improvement.
