Description: The UW Health Surgical Site Infection (SSI) Steering Committee oversees implementation strategies to reduce SSIs. The committee identified a need to establish a process to perform real time root cause analysis. The clinical question posed is whether SSI rates will be impacted with the implementation of STRIKE teams. The SSI Steering Committee had been previously working to implement bundle elements from preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care areas while continuing to work on sustainment. Colon and gynecology procedures were chosen as the focus for the STRIKE teams. The goal is to pull together smaller interdisciplinary groups to focus on SSI case reviews, root causes, and trends. Preliminary data suggests that SSI rates have decreased across the service lines targeted. The teams will review data and institute practice changes in order to continue SSI rate reduction.
