345 - Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Wound Classification: Accuracy Equals Accurate SSI Rates and Ensures Reimbursement
Description: CDC Wound Classification is woefully misused and underestimated in its ability to ensure correct analysis of SSIs while assuring correct insurance reimbursement rates. Our Hospital (PAMC) has undergone a process of retrospective evaluation of CDC Classification. With findings being less than optimal we initiated an intensive education program with daily reviews of previous days data along with immediate correction and education and rational. We also now have a standardized drop down in our EHR with the CDC Flowsheet in place throughout Providence Saint Joseph Health System. Next steps for this effort is to replicate original data collection.Determine if we have made any impact.Make New multidisciplinary corrections.Evaluate results and make further recommendations.SSIs alone warrant the need to ensure a documentation point, that is solely the responsibility of the perioperative nurse, is correct and accurate.
