Clinical Issue: Medical equipment has become a necessary condition for effective treatment. With the development of medical science and technology, medical equipment of operating room is adopted more and more widely, which is more and more refined and automated. The normal operation of these instruments and equipment is closely related to the outcome of the surgery together with medical safety. The operating room manages a large number of instruments and equipment, so it is important to achieve a unified and scientific management. This study aimed to investigate the current management situation of medical facilities in the operating rooms of national grade A tertiary hospitals and provide references for the improvement and perfection methods for medical facilities and their operation management. Description of Team: We come from the operating room of Ruijin Hospital affiliated to The Shanghai Jiaotong University, China. Team members Wei Wang and Qianjian Qian are both director nurses.Preparation and Planning: A questionnaire survey was conducted on the current situation of surgical equipment management in 150 grade A tertiary hospitals in China.
Assessment: Our hospital is a tertiary general teaching hospital with 49 operating rooms. The annual operation volume is about 50000. There are 146 surgical nurses, all are college graduates or above. Implementation: A total of 150 management personnel of operating room equipment from 150 hospitals in 22 provinces and 4 municipalities directly under the Central Government and 3 autonomous regions were picked for the questionnaire survey. The questionnaire on the status of equipment and materials management in operating rooms was designed by experts from the core group of the Operating Room Professional Committee of the Nursing Equipment and Materials Branch of China Association of Medical Equipment. The contents are divided into two parts: 1. General information of the respondents.2.Current status of medical equipment management in operating room. Outcome: There were significant differences in several factors of the informants of different regions each year, which mainly contained whether there was a benefit evaluation system for appropriation budget or instrument and equipment utility, whether there was statistical analysis on instrument usage rate, whether the equipment operation processes were stored in the files of the department, whether there was personnel special for the daily detections and equipment maintenance and whether informatization management was realized on the equipment(P<0.05).Implications for Perioperative Nursing: The effective preventative maintenance and life-cycle management of medical devices play a key role in ensuring their safe use and improving homogeneity across different regions. In the mean time, the levels of standardization have been improved as well for medical devices, which is developing towards information, the management of cost effectiveness needs to be enhanced.
