287 - Creating Our Future Through Strengthening Your OR Residency Program Through Preceptor Evolvement
Description: A Perioperative Operating Room Nurse Residency Program is offered twice a year to staff well over 100 Operating rooms throughout our hospital System. The Nurse Residency Program includes didactic, simulation lab and clinical time, where the new learner is paired with an experienced nurse preceptor. Learning occurs in both group settings, as well as individualized with one on one training. A survey questionnaire on the effectiveness of their preceptor experience during the program was sent to the 2017, 2018 and 2019 OR Nurse Residents. The survey questionnaire was established to assist with the development of a plan to improve the transition from the OR Residency Program into the clinical environment, and to establish a cohesive collaboration with the clinical preceptors. Using this information, our goal was to provide a more seamless transition, and to improve the Preceptor/Residents Relationship. We also used the information to develop the Daily Progress Form, ensuring timely and constructive feedback is given to Residents. The nurses in the OR Residency Program completed a learning assessment tool, to identify their learning style. The Preceptors also completed a learning assessment tool to identify their learning style and better understand the use of these styles in developing better individualized training. The expectations are to share the learning style of the OR Resident with the Preceptor prior to the assignment. The results showed there is a need to find a teaching assessment tool to assess the teaching style of the preceptor so that we can better pair them with the learner.
