124 - Mobile Learning for Reducing the Preparation Time of the Surgical Instruments and Equipments in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery for Newly Graduated Nurses
Description: Cardiovascular and thoracic surgery is a specialized, complex procedure that takes a long time, and also requires a lot of special instruments and equipments for surgery. Perioperative nurses who work in Cardiovascular and thoracic operating theater should have knowledge and understanding of pathological conditions, surgical procedures, the method of using of the medical supplies and surgical equipments, including basic skills in preparing surgical instruments and equipments on the surgical table, which is the basic skills of scrub nurses who deliver surgical instruments. Novice nurses lack of knowledge skills and experience. So they work slowly, not confident and must work under the supervision of more experienced nurses (Oermann & Garvin, 2002). Because of newly graduated nurses lacking of working experience, then they cannot prepare the surgical instruments properly and take a long time to do even if working under mentor guidance. From the literature review, mobile learning is a method that increases knowledge, skills, confidence in the work process, reduce anxiety in nursing practice. (Ju Hee Kim & Hanjong Park, 2019) And mobile learning also made newly graduated nurses able to learn anywhere, anytime, see virtual images, can review knowledge at any time with incurring the confidence in the preparation of equipments and surgical equipments correctly in newly graduated nurses and also help them reduce the duration of preparation of surgical instruments. The operating room unit realizes the importance of this issue. Therefore our department has created a project to use learning media via mobile devices wirelessly to reduce the preparation time of surgical instruments and equipments for Cardiovascular and thoracic surgery for the newly graduated nurses.
Objective: Reduce the time for preparing surgical instruments and equipments for newly method graduated nurses by learning through mobile devices wirelessly (Mobile-learning).
Method: Using the PDCA, started from planning, meeting, preparing to create a wireless learning media model, leading to practice and monitoring and evaluation. Target: 12 Newly graduated nurses who have to be rotated to practice in Cardiovascular and thoracic operating room in 2019. Result: Newly graduated nurses, who was receiving wireless learning via mobile devices, can reduce the preparation of surgical instruments and equipments. From the previous period, using an average of 33.50 minute (SD 2.39), then the average minutes reduced to 15.58 (SD 1.83) minutes. Suggestions: Using wireless learning media via mobile devices in novice nurses to work in the operating room should be encourage. Because learning media allows newly graduated nurses to have a freedom to learn anywhere or anytime to increase knowledge, ability and nursing skills in the operating room.
