348 - What Should I Wear Today? Achieving Compliance with Surgical Attire Policy
Description: Much of the discussions and studies related to surgical attire have focused on the existence of a strict policy and no effect on surgical site infections. After receiving a regulatory finding of non-compliance to our strict policy based upon AORN guidelines, our team was challenged with demonstrating 100% compliance through a daily audit for 90 days. A multidisciplinary team developed effective strategies to accomplish compliance. This included items such as posters with photos, a mandatory training module for staff and faculty, a demonstration video and daily audits. As we completed our corrective action, we found that as documented compliance went up, our surgical site infection rate went down. Our incidental findings suggest additional research is needed that documents compliance to a strict policy and the effect of reducing surgical site infections.
