121 - Safe and Sustainable Care in the Operating Room Supported by Global Standards
Description: Abstract Patients expect and deserve the best possible care, safe, of high quality and affordable. Patient safety is an important driver for healthcare professionals, working on the best results for their patients. The operating room (OR) is a high risk environment. High risk due to the technology used, the skills required and the prevailing high human factor. Due to effects of anaesthesiology, patients might not be vigilant during the peri-operative time. This increases the responsibility of the OR-staff to prevent errors. In recent years, several changes/innovations are implemented in OR’s all over the globe. Time-out-procedures are successful examples to reduce errors, or for early detection and correction. Even if in the OR human communication will continue to be an important factor, barcode scanning can greatly enhance beneficial effects. The use of international barcodes and GS1 standards support Time-Out procedures. These barcodes identify products, persons and locations, and the use reduces manual procedures, saves time and enhances the safety of administrative procedures. Based on international cases, this poster highlights the benefits of the use of GS1 identifiers in the OR, and also for instance how the barcode scanning can support the direct uploading of the data to an implant registry. Specific results include: enhanced patient safety due to direct electronic recording, reduction of manual administration, full product traceability (100%) from manufacturer to patient, improved inventory management, reduced called of procedures for ‘out-of-stock’, 80% reduction of waste due to lapsed expiry dates. Awareness of the impact is needed to gain the best results.
