PhD Candidate
University of Alberta, Alberta, Canada
I am a PhD student majoring in Food Science in the Department of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science at the University of Alberta in Canada. My research interests are mainly on functional foods and bioactive peptides. My thesis research is to develop novel food-derived antihypertensive peptides as functional food ingredients against hypertension. To date, I have 17 first- and co-authored peer-reviewed papers and 1 book chapter. I have given > 10 presentations (4 oral) at various institutional, national and international symposiums/conferences. I was awarded > 30 awards and scholarships in academics, communication, and leadership by the university, government, and other donors. I am also a reviewer for various peer-reviewed journals such as Food Chemistry, Food Research International, LWT-Food Science and Technology, Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, Functional Foods, etc.
Aside from research work, I volunteer as the chair in my department Graduate Students’ Association and the graduate student representative of the department council meeting and the University Graduate Students’ Association. My story with AOCS starts with my supervisor Dr. Jianping Wu and my lab colleagues as many of them are active AOCS members. This initiated my interaction with AOCS, and in January 2018, I became an AOCS student member. In 2019, I was honored with the Honored Student Award and was the winner in the Health & Nutrition Division poster competition. This year, I was so pleased to receive the H&N Student Award. Currently, I volunteer as the chair of the AOCS Student Common Interest Group and student representative in the Canadian Section of AOCS. AOCS is a great platform for oil chemists and food scientists and I wish to keep engaging and interacting with AOCS in the future.
