What does it take to make the news? How does it influence local leaders? Understanding and working with another public servant – the local press – is vital to demonstrating a library’s impact to the community and to their elected representatives. Join Pennsylvania Library Association’s Christi Buker for a discussion with a statehouse communications director and a local journalist on how listening to each other helps them connect with community priorities – and led to a significant increase for state library funding in 2019. This session will focus on specific ways to support journalists and explore why local news matters to decision makers at every level. Attendees will gain an understanding of how news outlets choose what’s news and which voices to include; how decision makers listen to their constituents through the news; and how library advocates can be a critical part of the discussion.
