Director, Cataloging and Metadata Services University of Washington
Do you work in technical services or information technology (IT)? Ever catch yourself thinking “How do I get my IT department to go along with this project?”, or “Why are they asking us (IT) to support this again?” IT and technical services staff interact, perhaps even overlap, in a variety of workflows including troubleshooting e-resource access, catalog display issues, and the list goes on. Sometimes these points of convergence are routine and unexceptional. Sometimes there is contention between workflows, questions of how to do something or who should do what. Come hear the experiences of three librarians representing two branches of technical services (acquisitions and cataloging) and one from IT on inter-departmental communication, collaboration and challenges. The audience will have opportunities to think about and discuss how their technical services and IT staff are organized within their own institutions and how workflows and structures might work better for IT and technical service harmony and efficiency.
