COVID-19 cases and deaths began to decline but with ongoing hotspot development and new surges, public health officials must continue to contain virus transmission, particularly as movement restrictions are eased. Further, they must prepare for possible subsequent surges by updating capacity management and patient transfer protocols, recognizing the continued need to manage post-acute care resources for all discharges, especially frail, vulnerable populations. SNFs and other long-term care providers will need strategies to re-organize from initial surges and prepare for future challenges based upon initial COVID-19 experiences. Re-grouping and preparing for the future likely will be particularly challenging for smaller providers.

Learning Objectives:

Articulate lessons learned on how best to protect vulnerable populations from COVID infection.
Discuss how to make skill-in-place protocols for non-COVID admissions as patients become COVID-positive.
Explain how to create provider partnerships and transfer protocols for various settings (e.g., home health, outpatient, home, etc.).
