Women's Audio Mission
Terri Winston is the Executive Director and Founder of Women's Audio Mission (WAM), a San Francisco/Oakland-based nonprofit that trains over 3,000 under-served women and girls every year to become the next generation of music producers and recording engineers. WAM's recording studios are the only professional studios in the world built and run entirely by women. WAM’s graduates have recorded award-winning projects by Beyonce’s Band, Kronos Quartet, Toro y Moi, ESPN, Tune-Yards, Mary J. Blige/Hillary Clinton, Neko Case, Disney, Salman Rushdie for NPR, National Geographic, Hollywood Records, Song Exploder and many more.
Winston’s career spans 30 years as a major-label recording artist, songwriter, producer and recording engineer. Winston has shared the stage with P.J. Harvey, Pixies, Flaming Lips, Fugazi, Throwing Muses, and Third Eye Blind. She has collaborated with Lenny Kaye of the Patti Smith Group and Greg Hawkes of The Cars and was a recording artist and producer for MainMan whose roster also included David Bowie, Lou Reed, & Iggy Pop. She has received an ASCAP songwriting award, Boston Music Award and Bay Area Music Award and was a tenured Professor/Director of Sound Recording Arts at City College of San Francisco from 2001-2011. Winston has a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University.
She is currently serving on the Recording Academy's (Grammy's) National Task Force on Diversity and Inclusion and The Academy of Country Music's Diversity and Inclusion Task Force.
