Biobrief – Joan Otomo-Corgel, DDS, MPH, FACD, FICD 2020
Dr. Joan Otomo-Corgel is a graduate of the UCLA Schools of Dentistry and Public Health, WLA VAMC General Practice and Periodontics Residencies. She is a Clinical Professor in the UCLA School of Dentistry and faculty at the VA. She was faculty at the WLACC Dental Hygiene Department. She has a private practice limited to Periodontics, oral medicine, and implantology in Los Angeles.
She is the Past President of the: American Academy of Periodontology, Western Society of Periodontology, and California Society of Periodontist. She is the current president of the LA Dental Society, a CDA delegate to the ADA, a member of ADA CDEL, UCLA Dean's Council, director - American Academy of Periodontology Foundation, AAP CEOC and LDQC committees. She lectures extensively on periodontal medicine, medical emergencies, over-the-counter dental products, and clinical periodontal topics. She has contributed to over 60+ journals and text
Joan is currently a member of the Fresno State University Foundation Board of Governors and School of Math and Science Advisory Council. She was a Trustee of Mount St. Mary’s University 2007-2015 (member of the Education Committee and chaired the Student Life Committee).
Dr. Otomo-Corgel was the 1997 UCLA School of Dentistry Alumnus of the Year,1998 OKU Robert Wolcott Recipient (selected by the faculty for distinguished service), 1998 Fellow of the American College of Dentists, 1999 Japanese American Dental Society Honoree of the Year, Fresno State University 2007 “Top Dog” Alumnus of the Year for the School of Math and Science and 2007, AAP Specialty Citation recipient and the 2016 California Society of Periodontists’ Educator of the Year Awardee.
She and her husband, Rich Corgel have two children, “Bucky” John (32) and Stefanie (29).
