W-100 - "Fake," "Fraud" and "Phony": Impostor Phenomenon in Dental Education

What do these people have in common: a student who thinks admissions let them in by mistake, a faculty member feeling everyone else is smarter, and an administrator afraid of the next big promotion? Impostor phenomenon! Impostor phenomenon (also known as impostor syndrome) is an intense feeling of self-doubt which often leaves an individual feeling like an intellectual fraud. This session will focus on the results of a 2018 study of impostor phenomenon at one dental school. Outcomes and mental health implications will be discussed, and participants will have an opportunity to utilize the Clance Impostor Phenomenon Scale to assess their own levels of impostor feelings.
Learning Objectives:
Define impostor phenomenon and understand risk factors, manifestations in an academic setting, and mental health outcomes. Identify the associated unique implications for students in health professions education, including dentistry.
Understand the prevalence of impostor phenomenon in dental student sample at a research study conducted at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry.
Identify one’s level of impostor feelings and how to help mitigate negative impact for self, students and colleagues. Identify strategies for student support in the dental education learning environment.
