HA-102 - Poverty and Empathy: Teaching Innovations in Patient Management
Tuesday, March 17, 2020
8:30 AM – 9:30 AM
CE: 1
To help strengthen capacity for tomorrow's dental workforce to address population health disparities, we developed the “Impacts of Poverty and Healthcare Consumerism” curriculum. Through this novel curriculum, clinical learners explore the relationship between poverty and clinical impact on population health in the United States. Learners are equipped with the patient management skills necessary to deliver empathetic care for underserved populations. In this workshop, we will describe how we leveraged an online platform with virtual simulation engagement strategies to supply dental and primary care providers with modern, evidence-based skills to address poverty-related risks that threaten health outcomes.
Learning Objectives:
Describe the development of a novel curriculum to strengthen the dental workforce to deliver empathetic care for underserved populations.
Reflect upon an interactive immersion experience within a virtual poverty simulation.
Create strategies to address unmet learning needs within their dental programs around poverty, empathy and patient management.
