60 Minute Workshop
AA-106 - Survival Skills for Managing Ethical Dilemmas
Sunday, March 15, 2020
3:30 PM – 4:30 PM
CE: 1
Ethical decision-making models are applied by students during their education. Models offer a framework for analysis, but they do not provide insights to manage the action(s) for resolution of the dilemma. Utilizing data collected during more than 20+ years of incorporating an ethical-rounds teaching model, trends in dilemmas and challenges experienced will be reported. Resolving dilemmas requires more than a model. Knowledge and opportunities to practice conflict resolution, respectful communication and advocacy skills, and how to manage decision-making outcomes is necessary for students and future practitioners. Scenarios and strategies are incorporated in the session to allow participants to engage in both audience response and role-play.
Learning Objectives:
Outline strategies to guide students in managing communication challenges with patients, peers or faculty.
Describe tactics for conflict resolution.
Identify strategies to support students in implementing the action(s) necessary to resolve an ethical dilemma.
